The idea was born in December 2012 during a conversation amongst FMCG professionals.
During that conversation we realized that within the International Category of Vermouth
we were missing some products that could broaden the selection available to bartenders.
With all the respect we have for the companies which formed the category and without
which we wouldn’t exist, we realized that the world goes on and, more importantly, mixology
is in a constant state of evolution. It is important to learn from the past, but we needn’t be
permanently nostalgic nor create facsimiles of established products. We wanted a product
with its own identity that could showcase truly contemporary Italian values.
This is the beginning of the project titled OSCAR.697.
First we needed a respected manufacturer with matchless credibility in the production
After a careful search, we hand picked Oreste Sconfi enza, owner of La Canellese. Oreste
has been producing Vermouth since 1957, both under his own brand and for respected
commercial labels. La Canellese is based in heartland of Vermouth, the town where
Vermouth was born; Calamandrana, a village of Canelli, in the province of Asti, in the
Piedmont region of Italy.
L’EQUILIBRISTA DEI SAPORI.
Having found our manufacturer, we wanted to create an exclusive recipe which would
be an evolution of the Vermouth tradition, without creating a break point in the Vermouth
This immense project, requiring grace and subtlety, was entrusted to a person we care
about very much for his humanity, his honesty and, of course, his professionalism and
palate. Oscar Quagliarini, bartender of many years in and around Milan, now in full fl ight
on behalf of SLJ Cohen. Oscar plies his trade in Paris and indeed in any part of the world
where he’s requested for his work, his experience and his wisdom in the art of mixing.
After three tough months of trials and tests on different samples, all of them strictly top
secret, here is fi nally the ultimate choice: the sample coded simply n°697.
OSCAR.697 refers to the “Oscar Vermouth that has the exclusive recipe n°697”.
Very simple, but very effective in its unembellished explanation. We need no romance, no
pretense. It just happened.
With the production of our 697 Vermouth underway, we had to dress our product with a
packaging that heralded contemporary Italian and craftsmanship but could also seem at
ease in the international spirit marketplace. We turned to another close associate David
Caon. David is an internationally renowned Ital-Australian designer who works from his
Sydney studio with brands such as Qantas Airlines and Carlton United Breweries.
Thanks to its clean and essential style, we achieved a result above our expectations.
The simplicity of the bottle combined with the sanded glass and the plum like color of the
vermouth create a fi nal aesthetic result very close to the idea of urban contemporaneity
we were looking for.
All the elements normally characterizing a classic Vermouth were revisited, stylized and
repositioned on the back label so as ensure the front emphasized only what we wanted to
communicate: OSCAR.697 - THE CONTEMPORARY VERMOUTH.
THE PRODUCT 697.
Our exclusive recipe n°697 respectfully adheres to the Vermouth production guidelines
imposed by the Italian authorities. It has strong notes of Absinthe, Rhubarb and Licorice.
The alcohol strength is 16%, while the sugar percentage is relatively low at 14% to ensure
the fi nal product is more bitter and dry than other labels. Additionally, and prerequisite for
us, the rich color of our Red Vermouth is obtained naturally using burnt sugar, without
added dyes or synthetic caramel such as e150c or e150d (already banned in many
countries outside the EU).
All ingredients are strictly natural.
These production methods make OSCAR.697 a very fresh, delicate and balanced product.
Ideal to drink on the rocks, shaken or in mixology. Just as it was 150 years ago.
THE PRODUCT 773.
The success of OSCAR.697 Rosso made possible the birth of OSCAR.697 Bianco.
The unique and exclusive recipe n°773 respects the Vermouth production guidelines set
by the Italian authorities.
It has a strong notes of Bergamot, Yarrow Muscat and Elderfl ower.
The alcohol strength is 16%, while the sugar level is kept relatively low at 14% to ensure
the fi nal product is drier and more bitter than other labels.
All the ingredients are strictly natural.
These production methods make OSCAR.697 Bianco a very fresh, delicate and balanced
product. Ideal to drink on the rocks, shaken or in mixology. Just as it was 150 years ago.
