Product information "Bergamottengeist - bergamot spirit"
Bergamot, hmm yes bergamot - you know it, but what is it actually?

Well, bergamot probably originated as a hybrid of lime and bitter orange. Some sources suggest the citron (those big, warty lemons) and bitter oranges, but that's of no concern to us here. The fruit, first mentioned in the 17th century, was actually never used for consumption. However, the fruit's essential oil is so subtle and intoxicating that the perfume industry was keen to use bergamot oil. Today almost every perfume contains bergamot oil as a fresh, sparkling top note. The cosmetics industry is ubiquitous!

Most likely, however, we all came into contact with the fine bergamot aroma in the form of the universally popular "Earl Grey" breakfast tea.

Visually you have to imagine the fruits similar to limes - similarly relatively small and weigh about 100-200g when harvested. They turn yellow similar to lemons harvested in southern Italy (Calabria) at the end of March.

There are three varieties: Castagnaro, Femminello and Fantastico, which differ in terms of quality and yield. The Fantastico variety brings the highest yield. The Femminello brings the best quality oil.

The Bötzinger "Calabria Connection" is of course also the source of the fruit here and we can consider ourselves lucky, because what Florian Faude gets out of the fruit is simply sensational. My previous remarks suggest that this spirit is rather soapy, but far from it. The fresh, sparkling notes are extremely complex and multi-layered. Combined with Gents Tonic, this is a very refreshing, delicious drink that not only goes well with summer, but is also reminiscent of summer, especially in the cold seasons.

The bergamot spirit is produced in the same way as the blood orange spirit. The fruits are first macerated in alcohol, later distilled and then reduced to drinking strength.

Faude Feine Brände
Florian Faude, born in 1984, belongs to a new generation of fruit distillers. The young man is actually a trained winegrower, but the fruit aroused his interest very early on. Already at the beginning of his apprenticeship he developed the idea of “Faude Feine Brande”. The aim is to revise the dusty image of the fruit brandy. With a healthy down-to-earth attitude, he notes that burned fruit used to be of modest quality and one thing is very clear: If you only throw windfall fruit into the burn pot, you shouldn't be surprised if only a "throat cleaner" comes out at the bottom. For this reason, Faude only uses fully ripe, flawless seasonal fruit. It is also important to him that he only obtains the fruit that he does not grow himself from local businesses that he is friends with. The effort he puts into may be very high, but numerous medals and awards prove that customers such as the First Class Lounge of Lufthansa in Berlin rightly know what is made in Bötzingen am Kaiserstuhl.

Distilling rights in Germany from 2018

In January 2018, the new alcohol tax law was passed, which reorganizes the distilling rights.

What actually is mash?

For the fruit brandy, the fruits are processed into a mash. For fruit spirits, on the other hand, the fruits are macerated and then distilled. But what is the difference between mashing and macerating?

What actually is: The difference between fruit brandy and fruit spirit

Today we would like to clarify the difference between the two distillates. When is it a ghost and when is it a fire? Are there differences in distillation or maceration?
