Thujon

Absinthe is very often associated with a drug-like effect. The reason for this is thujone, which gets into the spirit through the wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). Now, however, lawmakers are unlikely to allow a product that causes hallucinations. The only question is – was absinthe always as harmless as it is today, or was it different in the past? With reference to artists of the Belle Epoch, it is often claimed that absinthe was said to have had a completely different effect back then. A fallacy that has been scientifically proven. Dirk Lachenmeier, David Nathan Maister, Ted Breaux, Eva Maria Sohnius, Kerstin Schoeberl and Thomas Kuballa have published a scientific study in the "Journal of agricultural and food chemistry" that describes the topic of thujone in minute detail and clearly refutes some assumptions.
