Oliver Matter

The company history goes back to the late 1920ties when Ernst Luginbühl (great grandfather of Oliver Matter) was producing spirits and bitters in the town of Aarberg. There’s a very funny story how Luginbühl got in possession of an Absinthe receipt: Ernst Luginbühl had a hobby – breeding cattle. One day he was selling a cow to a farmer from the nearby Val de Travers (the region in Switzerland always famous for being the source of Absinthe). Since farmers there were really poor, the buyer wasn’t able paying the full price, so to compensate the rest of the price, he gave him a historic Absinthe recipe. Of cause back then this was of no use, because Absinthe was already illegal in Switzerland, but it should pay back later…

In 2005 Absinthe became legal again in Switzerland and a while before Olivers mother and his wife told him to try out the old formula just recently located in the company archive. Oliver though was hesitating because he didn’t want to have another product. Also he thought there are going to be more than enough producers in the Val de Travers. But the two ladies kept pushing him and eventually he did.

At about this time, two internationally well-known Absinthe dealers (Peter Schaf and Markus Lion) contacted Oliver independently because the heard of his Kallnacher Absinthe. They were looking for a distillery able reproducing historic formulas. The first collaboration between Markus and Oliver was an authentic reproduction of a Duplais receipt, because Markus was in possession of these books already. As Markus was in contact with a lot of artist in his past, he thought of bringing in an artist doing the label artwork, as Absinthe in the 19th century was a popular drink amongst the bohemia.

This very first product (Absinthe Duplais Verte) was awarded Gold best in class a year later at the IWSC, London. It was followed by Duplais Blanche, Duplais Balance, Brevans H.R. Giger, Brevans A. O. Spare, Nouvelle Vague etc. All highly appreciated and awarded by professional spirits experts.

And then Mansinthe came...
